✨ Technical Specifications
Egon Müller's Scharzhofberg is the crown jewel of the Saar, a cool tributary of the Mosel where Riesling achieves an unparalleled balance of piercing acidity and ethereal sweetness. The estate's history dates back to the late 18th century when the Müller family acquired the property after it was confiscated from the Monastery of St. Paul in Trier during the French Revolution. The 'Auktion' Spätlese is a legendary bottling, selected from the estate's finest, most expressive casks to be sold exclusively at the annual VDP Mosel auction in Trier. Grown on the steep, weathered grey slate soils of the Scharzhofberg hill, often from extremely old, ungrafted vines, this 100% Riesling is fermented in traditional oak Fuder. It represents the absolute pinnacle of the Spätlese category, offering an intense mineral core, vibrant acidity, and a complex array of stone fruits, white flowers, and wild honey that develop over decades.
🍾 About the Producer
Weingut Egon Müller-Scharzhof traces its heritage to 1797 when Jean-Jacques Koch acquired the historic estate, nestled in Wiltingen along the Saar valley within Germany's famed Mosel region. Handed down across generations, the estate is celebrated globally under the stewardship of Egon Müller IV, who maintains a deeply traditional approach emphasizing pristine vineyard management, late harvesting, and minimal cellar intervention. The estate is crowned by its holdings in the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard, home to pre-phylloxera, ungrafted Riesling vines grown on steep, slate soils. Egon Müller is globally acclaimed for producing arguably the purest, most ageworthy, and aristocratic sweet Rieslings in existence, ranging from exquisite Spätlese and Auslese to mythical, auction-commanding Trockenbeerenauslese expressions.
