Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) represents the absolute pinnacle of sweet winemaking, born from one of the wine world's most hallowed terroirs. Situated in the Saar valley, a cool tributary of the Mosel, the steep, slate-rich Scharzhofberg vineyard has a viticultural history dating back to medieval monks from the Abbey of St. Paul in Trier. The Müller family has stewarded this legendary estate since 1797. This TBA is an extraordinary rarity, produced only in exceptional vintages when autumn conditions allow Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) to slowly shrivel the Riesling grapes into intensely concentrated, nectar-like raisins. Hand-harvested berry by berry with obsessive precision, the wine is fermented in traditional old oak Fuder casks. The resulting elixir is a breathtaking balance of luscious, honeyed sweetness and electric, vibrant acidity, reflecting the cool Saar microclimate and the deep minerality of its ancient slate soils.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Established in 1797 when the Müller family acquired the historic estate, Weingut Egon Müller-Scharzhof is located in Wiltingen within the Saar sub-region of the Mosel, Germany. Today, the estate is meticulously managed by Egon Müller IV, who continues a multi-generational legacy of producing some of the world's most coveted and long-lived white wines. The winery is legendary for its peerless Rieslings sourced from the steep, slate-rich slopes of the iconic Scharzhofberg vineyard, as well as the Wiltinger Braune Kupp site under the Le Gallais label. Emphasizing traditional, low-intervention cellar practices and old, ungrafted vines, Egon Müller crafts exceptionally precise, mineral-driven, and exquisitely balanced Rieslings ranging from crisp QbA to legendary, auction-grade Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese expressions.
