Frescobaldi's Gorgona Rosso is born from a remarkable social and viticultural partnership on the island of Gorgona, the smallest island of the Tuscan Archipelago and home to Europe's last active penal colony. Since 2012, Frescobaldi agronomists and enologists have worked hand-in-hand with inmates, teaching them professional viticulture to aid their rehabilitation and societal reintegration. This rare red wine is crafted primarily from Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero, grown in a tiny, wind-swept vineyard facing the Mediterranean. The vines thrive in mineral-rich, volcanic soils, constantly bathed in salty sea breezes and intense island sun. The wine is aged with care, often utilizing terracotta jars to preserve its pure fruit expression, resulting in a red that beautifully reflects its wild maritime terroir with notes of Mediterranean macchia, dark cherry, and a distinct saline finish.
