Nierstein Riesling trocken
β³ Drinking Window
2024 - 2030
π· Vintage Profile
The 2022 vintage in Rheinhessen was characterized by an exceptionally hot and dry summer, which was moderated by critical late-summer rains that allowed the vines along the Roter Hang to achieve optimal phenolic ripeness without burning off essential acidity. This dry Village Riesling displays a slightly richer, riper stone fruit profile balanced by the distinctive smoky, iron-rich mineral drive typical of Nierstein's red slate. Universally regarded as a warm, highly reliable vintage for dry German whites, it offers early accessibility combined with structural balance. Drinking exceptionally well in 2026, it will continue to evolve gracefully through 2030.
π½οΈ Food & Wine Pairings

β¨ Technical Specifications
Hailing from the steep, sun-drenched terraces of Nierstein's legendary Roter Hang (Red Slope), this 2022 Riesling trocken is a pure expression of one of Germany's most celebrated terroirs. The 280-million-year-old red clay-slate soils, rich in iron, absorb the intense summer heat and radiate it back to the vines, imparting a signature smoky, wild-herb, and flinty minerality to the 100% Riesling grapes. The 2022 growing season in Rheinhessen was marked by extreme warmth and dryness, forcing the vines to dig deep into the ancient slate for moisture. This struggle yielded a wine of remarkable concentration, balancing ripe peach and zesty citrus aromas with a vibrant, saline acidity. Vinified with minimal intervention and aged in a combination of stainless steel and large neutral oak casks, it captures both the warmth of the vintage and the cool, stony precision of its origin.
πΎ About the Producer
Weingut Gunderloch was established in 1890 when Mainz banker Carl Gunderloch acquired prime parcels on the steep banks of the Rhine, later becoming a founding member of the VDP. Anchored in Nackenheim, the estate comprises approximately 29 to 31 hectares centered along the legendary Roter Hang ('Red Slope'). This dramatic geological formation is dominated by 280-million-year-old Permian red shale, clay, and slate (Rotliegend), which imbues the vines with unmatched mineral depth, phenolic tension, and warmth reflected from the adjacent river. Sixth-generation winegrower Johannes Hasselbach took the helm in 2016, ushering in certified organic farming, spontaneous fermentations, and a paradigm shift toward tension, lower alcohol, and transparency. Benchmark expressions range from the precise, off-dry Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett and bone-dry Grosse GewΓ€chse from Nackenheimer Rothenberg and Niersteiner Pettenthal to world-renowned auction-grade Auslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen.
