Perched on the vertigo-inducing terraces of the Winninger Uhlen, the 'Roth Lay' parcel is a geological marvel. The name 'Uhlen' is whispered to originate from the owls (Eulen) that nest in the warm, craggy slate cliffs. Here, the 'Roth Lay' sub-site is defined by its striking red slate soils rich in iron oxide, which absorb the intense Mosel sun and radiate heat back to the vines. This ultra-rare Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) is only produced in exceptional vintages when the autumn mists of the Mosel river foster the perfect development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). Every single shriveled, raisin-like berry is painstakingly hand-selected by experienced harvesters crawling the steep terraces. The resulting nectar undergoes an incredibly slow, spontaneous fermentation, yielding a wine of monumental concentration, where luscious honeyed sweetness is perfectly balanced by a vibrant, electric spine of acidity and a deep, smoky, iron-driven minerality.
