The Winninger Uhlen Rothlay Riesling Trocken is an extraordinary expression of terroir from one of the most extreme vineyard sites in the world. Located in the Terrassenmosel, the 'Rothlay' is a prized, ultra-steep parcel within the grand Uhlen vineyard, distinguished by its unique, iron-rich red slate soils ('rot' meaning red, and 'lay' being the old Celtic-derived regional term for slate). This unique geology imparts a distinctively smoky, intensely mineral, and exotic character to the wine. Heymann-Löwenstein utilizes traditional, low-intervention craftsmanship to capture this terroir, employing spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, extensive skin contact, and prolonged maturation on the lees in large, neutral oak casks. The resulting dry Riesling is powerful, highly structured, and deeply complex, showing a fascinating tension between rich stone fruit, wild herbs, and a fierce, salty minerality.
