Volnay is celebrated for producing some of the most elegant, aromatic red wines in the Côte de Beaune, and the Cuvée Gauvain is a stellar representation of this Premier Cru terroir. Named in honor of Bernard Gauvain, a canon of the collegiate church of Notre-Dame de Beaune who bequeathed his estate to the Hospices in 1804, this cuvée is crafted from meticulously selected Premier Cru parcels within the Volnay appellation, including Santenots, Ronceret, and Mitans. The soils here, rich in limestone and clay, impart a refined structure, silky tannins, and an intense bouquet of red berries, violets, and subtle spices. Following the traditional Hospices de Beaune charity auction, the wine is aged in oak casks by chosen négociants-éleveurs, preserving its vibrant fruit character and mineral tension.
🍾 About the Producer
Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins, the Hospices de Beaune was established as a charitable hospital supported by donations of prime vineyard parcels. Today, the historic estate encompasses over 60 hectares of exceptionally situated Premier and Grand Cru vineyards across Burgundy's Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Revered worldwide for its historic charity wine auction held every November since 1859, the domaine employs meticulous, organic viticultural techniques to highlight the uncompromised terroir of each plot. Its celebrated portfolio consists of distinguished Pinot Noir and Chardonnay cuvées, each named in honor of prominent historical benefactors such as Cuvée Nicolas Rolin and Cuvée Charlotte Dumay.
