Famille Hugel's Riesling Schoelhammer is a monument to Alsatian winemaking, sourced from a historic 0.63-hectare plot in the heart of the famous Schoenenbourg Grand Cru vineyard in Riquewihr. First released with the 2007 vintage, this single-vineyard masterpiece represents the absolute pinnacle of Hugel's Riesling production. The Schoelhammer plot, planted on steep, south-facing slopes, features a unique terroir of triassic Keuper marl, dolomite, and gypsum, which imparts an intense, crystalline minerality and profound structural depth to the wine. Hugel's traditional winemaking philosophy shines here: the grapes are hand-harvested, gently pressed, and fermented in ancient, century-old oak foudres using native yeasts. The wine is then aged extensively on its fine lees and held in the family's historic cellars for several years before release, ensuring it reaches the market with exceptional complexity, vibrant acidity, and a signature petrol-tinged, stony elegance.
πΎ About the Producer
Established in 1639 in the picturesque medieval village of Riquewihr, Famille Hugel is one of the most venerable and celebrated wine producers in Alsace, France. Managed continuously by more than a dozen generations of the Hugel family, the estate combines historic family vineyards with carefully sourced fruit to champion the diverse terroirs of the region. Hugel was instrumental in establishing the official regulations for Alsace's revered late-harvest categories, Vendanges Tardives and SΓ©lection de Grains Nobles. Renowned globally for their purity, elegance, and ageability, the winery crafts benchmark dry and sweet expressions of noble Alsace varieties, particularly Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris, vinified traditionally in century-old oak foudres.
