Jacques Selosse's 'Version Originale' (VO) Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut is a masterclass in the expression of Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, specifically the chalk-dense soils of Avize, Oger, and Cramant. Crafted as a blend of three successive vintages, VO undergoes extended lees aging—typically five to six years—before being disgorged with little to no dosage. Anselme Selosse's revolutionary approach, which treats Champagne with the respect of a still Burgundy wine, shines through in this cuvée. Fermented in oak casks using indigenous yeasts, the wine bypasses the standard industrial formula of Champagne to deliver a deeply vinous, oxidative, and intensely mineral-driven profile. It stands as a monument to terroir-driven winemaking, capturing the wild, untamed energy of the chalky soils and the visionary spirit of a producer who redefined the region's possibilities.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Founded in 1949 in the Grand Cru village of Avize, Champagne Jacques Selosse rose to legendary status under the visionary leadership of Anselme Selosse, who took over the estate in 1974. Applying Burgundian winemaking philosophies to the Côte des Blancs, Anselme pioneered low yields, organic viticulture, and fermentation in oak casks, fundamentally transforming modern Champagne production. The estate is celebrated for its highly individualistic, terroir-driven cuvées, including the solera-aged Substance and the acclaimed Lieux-dits series, which showcase an unparalleled depth, oxidative complexity, and vinous character.
