Viña Ardanza is one of the most storied names in Rioja, crafted by the historic La Rioja Alta, S.A., founded in Haro's Barrio de la Estación in 1890. Named in honor of co-founder Don Alfredo Ardanza, this wine represents the pinnacle of traditional Rioja blending. It marries Tempranillo from the clay-limestone soils of Fuenmayor and Cenicero with old-vine Garnacha from the stony terraces of Tudelilla in Rioja Oriental. The Garnacha provides a luscious, fleshy counterpoint to the structured, elegant Tempranillo. In only the most extraordinary vintages—such as 1964, 1973, 2001, 2010, and 2016—is this wine elevated to the status of 'Reserva Especial.' True to the estate's artisanal heritage, the components are aged separately in hand-crafted American oak barrels coopered on-site for up to three years, resulting in a wine of legendary complexity, boasting notes of sweet spice, dried cherries, tobacco, and leather.
