Bastardo is one of the legendary, nearly extinct grape varieties of Madeira. Once widely planted across the island before the devastating phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century, it has since become a true rarity, prized by collectors and historians alike. Pereira D'Oliveira, renowned for their unmatched library of ancient casks, is one of the few historic houses to maintain and release wines from this elusive grape. The Bastardo Reserva is crafted in a medium-dry style, utilizing the traditional canteiro system where the wine ages slowly in seasoned oak casks under the natural warmth of the lodge attics. This gentle, decades-long oxidative process coaxes out a singular profile characterized by high acidity, rustic complexity, and a distinctive spicy, dark-toned dried fruit character, offering a rare liquid connection to Madeira's rich viticultural past.

Founded in 1850 by João Pereira d'Oliveira, Pereira D'Oliveira is an esteemed, independent family-owned Madeira house based in the historic center of Funchal on Madeira Island, Portugal. Renowned for its vast reserves of historic library stocks acquired through family heritage and the assimilation of notable historic lodges, the house practices traditional canteiro aging in seasoned oak casks, allowing natural warmth to slowly concentrate and mature the wines over decades or even centuries.
