Real Companhia Velha's Vintage Port represents the absolute pinnacle of the house's winemaking, declared only in exceptional years when nature provides perfect conditions. Sourced primarily from the steep, sun-drenched stone terraces of the historic Quinta das Carvalhas, which overlooks the Douro River, this wine is a liquid testament to over 260 years of history. Legend has it that the Marquis of Pombal himself established the strict boundaries of the Douro region to protect the integrity of such monumental wines. The grapes are traditionally trodden in granite lagares to maximize extraction of color, tannin, and flavor before undergoing a short fortification process. The wine is then aged in large oak vats for about two years before being bottled unfiltered, allowing it to slowly mature and develop its legendary complexity over decades in the cellar.
