While the historic Selbach-Oster estate is globally renowned for its steep-slope Rieslings, their Rivaner Trocken showcases a delightful, everyday side of Mosel winemaking. Rivaner, also known as Müller-Thurgau, was created in the late 19th century as a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale. In the slate-rich soils of the Mosel, Selbach-Oster crafts this dry white wine to emphasize freshness and immediate charm. Unlike their late-harvest Rieslings, this Rivaner is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve its bright, primary fruit character and delicate floral aromas. Steeped in centuries of family winemaking tradition along the dramatic slate slopes of the Middle Mosel, Weingut Selbach-Oster represents one of Germany's most distinguished Riesling estates. Managed by Johannes Selbach and his family, the estate meticulously tends prized, steep vineyard parcels across legendary grand cru sites including the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Schlossberg, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr, home to significant plantings of ancient, ungrafted vines. Cellar practices emphasize minimal intervention, relying on native yeast fermentations and maturation in traditional large oak Fuder casks to capture pure terroir expression and vibrant acidity.
