โจ Technical Specifications
The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr 'Rotlay' Riesling is a magnificent expression of one of the Mosel's most prized historical parcels. The name 'Rotlay' derives from the local dialect, where 'Rot' refers to the iron-rich red slate unique to this specific enclave of the grand cru Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyard, and 'Lay' means slate. This unique soil composition, combined with extremely old, ungrafted vines on steep, south-facing slopes, yields a Riesling of extraordinary depth and complexity. The Selbach family hand-harvests these grapes, often selecting botrytised berries for an Auslese-level concentration, and ferments them using indigenous yeasts in traditional, large oak Fuder casks. The resulting wine is a masterclass in balance, marrying opulent stone fruit sweetness with a vibrant, salty minerality and a laser-like acidity that defines the legendary Mosel style.
