Suntory Royal was first introduced in 1960 to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary and stands as the final masterwork blended by Suntory's legendary founder, Shinjiro Torii. The 'SR' variant, particularly in the 'Queen Size' 1000ml bottling popular in the late 20th century, represents a classic era of Japanese whisky blending. Crafted using malt whiskies from the historic Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries alongside grain whiskies from Chita, this blend was designed to appeal to the sophisticated Japanese palate. The bottle's unique shape is inspired by the torii gate of the Yamazaki Distillery, symbolizing the gateway to Japanese whisky heritage. It offers a rich, harmonious profile of dried orchard fruits, gentle oak spice, vanilla, and a whisper of peat smoke.

Suntory blev grundlagt i Osaka i 1899 af Shinjiro Torii under navnet Torii Shoten og står i dag som både pioneren inden for japansk whisky og et af verdens mest prominente spiritushuse. Drevet af Toriis visionære livsfilosofi 'Yatte Minahare' (gå efter det) opførte huset i 1923 Japans allerførste maltwhisky-destilleri, Yamazaki. Beliggenheden ved foden af Tennozan-bjerget blev nøje udvalgt på grund af det krystalklare, bløde vand fra tre sammenløbende floder, og i 1973 fulgte det højtbeliggende, skovomkransede Hakushu-destilleri.
