✨ wine.spec_sheet
Conceived in the early 1990s by the visionary Álvarez family of Vega Sicilia, Alion was created to offer a modern, avant-garde expression of Ribera del Duero that stands independent of its legendary sibling. Named after the region of León where the family's patriarch was born, Alion represents a deliberate departure from the traditional, ultra-long aging of Unico. Crafted from 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) sourced from carefully selected vineyards in Padilla de Duero, Valbuena de Duero, and Pesquera, the wine benefits from the region's distinctive alluvial and clay-limestone soils. Unlike the classic Vega Sicilia wines, Alion is aged for 12 to 14 months in 100% new French oak barrels, followed by extensive bottle refinement. This contemporary approach yields a wine of intense concentration, vibrant fruit character, and seamless integration, capturing the raw power of the Duero terroir with a sleek, cosmopolitan elegance.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Established in 1864 by Eloy Lecanda y Chaves in Valbuena de Duero, Valladolid, Spain, Vega Sicilia stands as the most prestigious and historic estate in the Ribera del Duero region. Now owned and meticulously managed by the Álvarez family, the winery is globally revered for its uncompromising dedication to traditional, ultra-long oak aging regimes that yield wines of unparalleled complexity and longevity. The estate's signature red wines, primarily crafted from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) alongside small percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon, are epitomized by the legendary 'Unico'—which is aged for a decade or more before release—and the highly acclaimed 'Valbuena 5°'. This rigorous production philosophy, blending deep-rooted Spanish heritage with meticulous vineyard management along the Duero River, solidifies Vega Sicilia's status as an icon of fine wine.
