Verget's 'Terroirs de Roche' is a masterful expression of Mâcon-Villages, showcasing the philosophy that the Mâconnais holds terroirs capable of rivaling the prestigious Côte d'Or. Crafted from 100% Chardonnay, this cuvée is sourced from select vineyards characterized by exceptionally stony, limestone-rich soils—hence the name 'Roche' (rock). To preserve the pristine, mineral-driven purity of the fruit, Verget vinifies and ages this wine primarily in stainless steel or concrete vats, avoiding the heavy influence of new oak. This minimalist approach coaxes out a vibrant bouquet of green apple, citrus zest, and crushed wet stones, backed by the signature tension and energy that revolutionized white winemaking in the region during the late 20th century.
🍾 About the Producer
Maison Verget was established in 1990 by visionary Belgian winemaker Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine Heynen in Sologny, located in the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy. Renowned as a trailblazing négociant-éleveur, the house revolutionized Burgundy winemaking by implementing uncompromising standards of fruit selection, gentle horizontal pressing, and precise maturation on fine lees with minimal oak intervention. While celebrated globally for its pure, mineral-laden Chardonnay sourced across prime terroirs from the Mâconnais to Chablis and the Côte d'Or, Verget also applies its meticulous craft to expressive Pinot Noir and pioneering southern expressions.
