In the steep, wind-swept hills of Southern Styria, Chardonnay is known by its historic regional synonym, Morillon. Local lore attributes this name to the 19th-century arrival of French vines brought by Archduke Johann; unable to pronounce the French nomenclature, local farmers christened the grape 'Morillon.' Weingut Tement's Ried Grassnitzberg Morillon is a masterclass in cool-climate expression, sourced from one of the region's oldest and most revered single vineyards. Characterized by fossilized coralline limestone (Muschelkalk) and clay soils, the Grassnitzberg vineyard imparts a profound, salty minerality to the wine. Crafted under strict biodynamic principles, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation and extended lees aging in neutral oak casks. This minimal-intervention approach coaxes out a wine of incredible tension, vibrant acidity, and a deep, savory complexity that reflects its unique alpine-maritime terroir.
